“The depiction of mother and child is one of the oldest and most enduring themes in art history. From ancient cave paintings and Egyptian tombs to Renaissance frescos and contemporary depictions, artists have long engaged with the complex experiences of motherhood.”

I’m super keen to check out this exhibition at the NGV, it features over 200 works across mediums and cultures and showcases the unique and universal experiences of motherhood.

It’s running until July and is open 10am to 5pm daily at The Ian Potter Centre.

Tarot Readings by Lady Bijou

Oh you thought it was only Wednesday’s at The Shady Lady?? Think again! Every 1st and 3rd Monday of each month you can head to Daddy Bar in Brunswick for a free tarot reading. Whether you are searching for an answer or simply want a bit of fun, Lady Bijou is ur girllllll. They got for 10 minutes, go in open minded, have fun with it etc etc.

Every time I see a kinosthesia event I can’t help but include it. This is Season 3, Volume 3 and they’ve named it ‘femcel shit’ (important subject alert!) Or as they’ve coined it: for the lovers and the losers! Hey.. sign me up!

They’ll be screening ‘May’, a psychological thriller about a socially awkward veterinary assistant with a lazy eye and obsession with perfection descends into depravity after developing a crush on a boy with perfect hands. PLUS, ‘Lick the Star’, a short by Sofia Coppola.

Bridesmaids Film Screening

It’s a triple feature this week diva’s! If the first 2 film recs don’t take your fancy, perhaps you’d prefer the certified classic that is… Bridesmaids? It’s the 15th anniversary (feeling sick, remember seeing at the cinema ((twice)) and Northcote Social club are celebrating with The Social Club Cinema.

You don’t need a film synopsis for this one do you?? Bridesmaids is a comedy following Annie, an out-of-work pastry chef whose life unravels while serving as the maid of honour for her best friend, Lillian. Competing with a wealthy, "perfect" bridesmaid, Annie faces chaotic wedding planning, personal financial ruin, and disastrous social events, ultimately finding redemption and friendship.

I don’t know about you but I lurve the sound of that! The group exhibition is showing at Flinders Lane Gallery and looks to be a feast for the eyes and the soul. Visiting exhibitions will forever be one of my favourite free activities in Melbourne (and around the world).

Hey… silly billy clown stupid fuck zumba anyone?? Idk how I stumbled across this one but I’m thrilled it’s making the cut. What I’ve gathered is there’s gonna be clown themed techno music alongside some zumba run by actual clowns? Maybe?

It’s happening at The Toff in Town on Thursday night! Doors = 9.30pm, Zumba = 10pm, Stupid Fuck & the Silly Clowns = 11pm.

My exhibition rec this week is Rebel Heart: Love Letters and Other Declarations. Opening on Thursday, the exhibition explores romantic love and heartbreak through letters, diaries and manuscripts whilst accompanied or amplified by music from Australian artists Angie McMahon, Mindy Meng Wang, Mo’Ju and Amos Roach!

I’ve been making an effort to visit more exhibitions as I recommend so many and let me tell you, I’m never disappointed!

Across the week they will showcase Symphonic Celebration, Australian Youth Orchestra and MSO x Find Your Voice Collective | SONDER.

Brunswick Artists’ Bar has got to be one of hottest spots in town when it comes to showcasing live local acts. This month you can catch Bie Bambou every Thursday for her February residency! Drawing inspo from Kate Bush, Cocteau Twins & Jeff Buckley.. I think I may need to swing by :)

This Friday the 13th (spooooky) The Toff is putting on Other Worlds Other Sounds (OWOS) and the line up is stacked! Joining OWOS residents Mark Moon and DJ Friday is Lay Down the Groove, a Melb-based duo originally from Bogotá, Colombia. Blending deep house, electro, and percussive club rhythms the pair will be accompanied by Shannon who’s sets are mostly vinyl and blend funky, deep, and house classics with UKG. Fun!!!

St Kilda Festival is back for 2026 if you can believe it! Across both days, the free festival will span across the St Kilda foreshore for an epic weekend of live music, performers, rides and activations. They truly cover all bases!!

If you aren’t familiar, Saturday is First Peoples First & Sunday is Big Festival Sunday. On Sunday they’ve got some huge acts playing like Sneaky Sound System, Babe Rainbow, Mental As Anything, Jessica Mauboy, and more!!!

Social Sanctuary

Dropping in incase you forgot! Northcote Social Club showcases local and up and comers every Monday at Social Sanctuary. It’s the best way to catch some live music whilst supporting new talent :-)

This week Ebi Nori and the Phantom Fingers, Waxman and Total Care are on the bill!

Monday 5th January (to Thursday 8th):

Outdoor Cinema: Dancing with Danger

That’s right! Open Air’s Dancing with Danger series continues through this week from Monday to Thursday at Fed Square! As I mentioned last week, each night is a double feature; the first being a music themed movie and the second an action.

The first film kicks off at 6pm and should wrap up by 10/10.30pm.

Underground Comedy

Wednesday 7th January:

Still Life Sessions: A space to draw

Wednesday is lookin to be a hot one so why not stop by Northcote Library and do a lil still life drawing under the aircon? ദ്ദി´ ˘ `)✧ However, if the evening weather is on the kinder side (doubtful) they noted they’ll take the pencils and paper outside into the library courtyard for a breezy open-air session under the evening sky… lush!!!

Either way, this looks like such a wholesome and relaxing activity - all skill levels welcome AND materials supplied :)

Dole Night at The Tote

Dole night!! The Tote in Collingwood usually puts on these free showcases monthly as a chance to catch some live music without the price tag. It’s free entry AND a free BBQ - yeeehawww.

Stink Tank The Drag Show

“Live from B.O., drag king Johnny Cocksville presents Stink Tank The Drag Show: Naarm's newest drag open stage. Johnny’s turning Bar Open’s band room into a playground for drag kings, queens, and things to perform whatever the fuck they want.”

Anime and Book Club!

I stumbled across this and wanted to include! Whilst I’d say I’m an amateur when it comes to anime, I’d like to know more!! At the book club they will discuss anime, culture, politics, political themes in certain media and more.. all bases covered, my loves.

They even said snacks will be provided, get in!

Thursday 8th January:

Cinema Yarra: Happy New Year, Colin Burstead

For those with a more flexible schedule, Collingwood Library is screening Happy New Year, Colin Burstead on Thursday afternoon. There is nothing sweeter than watching an old movie with a bunch of strangers in the media room at a library, u feel me?

Film synopsis: Happy New Year, Colin Burstead is a Ben Wheatley film about Colin hosting his extended, dysfunctional family at a lavish manor for New Year’s Eve, only for family tensions to explode, especially with the surprise arrival of his estranged brother David, turning the holiday into a chaotic, booze-fueled study of British family dynamics, class, and unspoken hostilities, set against a backdrop of social unrest (Brexit).

Every Thursday the Kindred House Band open the floor for an improvised jam night. They’ll be playing Jazz, House, Funk & Hip Hop, whether you want to join in or enjoy the groove this is def one to check out if you live in the West :)

Bar For Now: DJ Loc Bob

Hello??? A groovy cool bar in St Kilda that I’m discovering after leaving?? Smh. This is definitely a spot I’m eager to check out. Bar For Now is a neighbourhood bar in Balaclava/St Kilda that regularly hosts DJ’s and spins vinyl.

On Thursday it’s DJ Loc Bob and it’s happening from 8pm to 11pm.

Upstate Studios x 1 Hotel Melbourne Pilates Refresh

Perfect Saturday morning alert!!! Upstate Studios are teaming up with and 1 Hotel Melbourne for a gorgeous pilates session set within the greenery-filled sanctuary at 1 Hotel Melbourne in Docklands. All levels welcome with post-class refreshments provided and connect with like minded ppl. I like the sound of that :-)

The class will go for 50 mins and spots are limited - be sure to book below.

Hear me out: paella, mojito’s and Latin music? Yes pls! They’ll actually have 20 + vendors selling street food as well as a beer garden, a marketplace and live bands and DJ’s - bliss.

Sabi Sounds: Sundays Walk & Run Club

“Sabi Sounds is a Tokyo-to-Seoul inspired day-to-night listening café and record bar in Hawthorn. From coffee and matcha mornings to vinyl, highballs, and dessert nights, we blend music, mood, and modern Asian café culture into one warm, all-day experience.”

I stumbled across a TikTok about Sabi Sounds shortly after seeing this post on Eventbrite and it sold me! The cafe/record bar looks sooo funky and this is such a cool incentive for an early Sunday morning. The run (/walk) club kicks off at 7.30am each week and is a smooth 5km followed by some yummy coffee and groovy music.
